The Challenges We Solve

Skill Gaps

Your team is strong, but this project needs expertise you don't have—and can't justify hiring full-time. RF design. EMC compliance. FPGA development. Specialized skills that are critical for three months, then not again for a year.

Bandwidth Constraints

Every engineer is already committed. The new initiative matters, but so does maintaining your existing product line. Something has to give—unless you can add capacity without the six-month hiring process.

Coordination Complexity

You've tried the multi-vendor approach. Hardware from one firm, firmware from another, compliance consulting from a third. The result? Finger-pointing at every interface and integration problems nobody owns.

Timeline Pressure

The market window won't wait. Competitors aren't standing still. You need a partner who can accelerate development without cutting corners on quality.

These challenges don't have to define your project. Here's how we address each one.

Our Development Process

Every PDE engagement follows a structured, phase-gated approach—providing the transparency you need with the flexibility complex products demand.

Phase 1: Discovery & Scoping

(1-2 weeks)

Deep-dive into requirements, risk assessment, scope definition, and budget alignment. You receive a detailed project proposal with phased execution plan.

Phase 2: Concept & Architecture

(2-4 weeks)

System architecture, technology selection, proof-of-concept validation, and certification roadmap development.

Phase 3: Design & Development

(8-16 weeks)

Detailed design work across all disciplines, prototype builds, and continuous integration testing.

Phase 4: Testing & Iteration

(4-8 weeks)

Functional validation, pre-compliance EMC testing, environmental stress testing, and design refinement.

Phase 5: Certification & Production

(4-12 weeks)

Final compliance submissions, certification lab coordination, manufacturing documentation, and production handoff.

Phase 6: Deployment & Support

(Ongoing)

Manufacturing launch support, knowledge transfer, and ongoing technical assistance as needed.

Process Note: We combine phase-gated rigor for hardware with Agile flexibility for software and firmware. Weekly check-ins, monthly progress reports, and JIRA-based transparency keep you informed without drowning you in meetings.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Note: These are illustrative examples different from our featured case studies—visit our Portfolio for detailed success stories.

Example 1 - Embedded SME Support

Situation: A client's firmware team hit a wall on a complex bootloader implementation. They needed specialized expertise for 8 weeks.

Engagement: One senior embedded engineer integrated with their team, using their codebase and development environment.

Outcome: Bootloader completed, knowledge transferred, client team upskilled on the architecture.

Example 2 - Full Product Development

Situation: A startup had a validated concept but no engineering team. They needed to go from prototype to certified, manufacturable product.

Engagement: Full PDE team covering electronics, mechanical, firmware, and compliance over 14 months.

Outcome: FCC/ISED/CE certified product, complete manufacturing package, successful production launch.

Example 3 - Certification Rescue

Situation: A company failed FCC testing two weeks before their planned launch. They needed EMC debugging expertise immediately.

Engagement: RF engineer on-site within days, using our portable test equipment and isolation chamber.

Outcome: Root cause identified, design modifications implemented, certification achieved with minimal launch delay.

Common Questions

How do you work with companies that have existing engineering teams?

We're designed for it. Most of our clients have internal teams—they engage PDE to fill specific skill gaps or add bandwidth. Our Account Owner/Project Owner structure ensures seamless coordination while our engineers integrate directly with your workflow and tools.

What's a typical engagement look like?

Most start with a focused phase—often discovery or high-level design—that lets both sides validate fit before committing to larger scope. From there, we structure work in defined phases with clear deliverables. Some clients engage us for a single certification push; others have worked with us continuously for over a decade.

How do you handle intellectual property?

PDE retains ownership of IP developed during projects, but grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use all IP associated with your project upon full payment. We can negotiate full IP transfer on a case-by-case basis if your situation requires it.

What industries do you have experience in?

Commercial, industrial automation, medical technology, defense and security, consumer electronics, telecommunications, and energy/power systems. The common thread is complex products requiring multi-disciplinary engineering and often regulatory certification.

How do you price your services?

Time-and-materials with clearly scoped phases. Each phase has defined deliverables and a transparent budget. This gives you predictability without forcing either side into fixed-price arrangements that incentivize cutting corners.

Where are you located?

Burnaby, BC (Greater Vancouver), Canada. We serve clients throughout North America. Our hybrid work model makes geographic distance a non-issue for most engagements.
